Daddy Lumba was suffering; I was happy when I heard of his death – Big Akwes (Video)

Kumawood actor Christian Akwasi Asamoah—better known as Big Akwes—has sparked controversy after speaking openly about his reaction to the death of highlife legend Daddy Lumba.
In a July 28 interview on Obaatanpa Radio with host Mistake Chanti, Big Akwes said he was relieved upon hearing the news of Lumba’s passing—not out of dislike, but because the music icon had suffered significantly in his final years . According to Akwes, Daddy Lumba had undergone spinal surgery, spent nearly three years in a wheelchair, and was living in constant pain despite extensive medical care and more than 90 medications .
Reflecting on recent experiences, he recalled that Lumba missed a major funeral performance despite a GH₵ 4 million booking, and that he appeared physically frail even during a music video shoot—a clear indication of his deteriorating health .
Big Akwes clarified that his emotions were not driven by malice but compassion, believing Lumba’s death offered respite from years of agony .
The comments have drawn widespread criticism. While many acknowledge the highlife legend’s long-standing health struggles, critics argue that expressing relief at his death was insensitive and poorly timed so soon after his passing .
Daddy Lumba—born Charles Kwadwo Fosu—died at age 60 on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra, after a brief illness. Plans are under way for public memorials and a candlelight vigil in his honour .
