Not All Heroes Wear Capes: How Officer Derrick Ayisah Is Redefining Policing in Ghana

In a world where the Ghana Police Service is often criticized for corruption and misconduct, one officer has stood out as a shining example of integrity, compassion, and true service.
No. 57030 D/L/CPL Derrick Ayisah, currently with the Regional CID at Oti Region/Dambai, has proven to Ghanaians, especially those in the Oti Region — including myself — that not all police officers are corrupt or wicked.
Let me take you back to where it all began.
In 2023, my iPhone was stolen during a break-in. While investigations were ongoing, I actively tracked the stolen device, as the thief continued to use their SIM card in one of the stolen phones. After months of painstaking effort, I finally tracked one of the suspects to the Jerusalem Guest House in Dambai, the regional capital of the Oti Region.
It was here that Officer Derrick Ayisah came into the picture.
With his assistance, we apprehended the suspect, who was then taken to the charge office for processing. During the process, the suspect admitted to the theft before the case could even proceed to court. However, Officer Ayisah didn’t just stop at arresting the criminal. He went further to investigate the young man’s background, uncovering a heartbreaking story.
The suspect’s parents lived in Nkawkaw, and his personal situation was dire. Even more tragic, he had impregnated a fellow classmate who gave birth before they both graduated. Addicted to drugs and unable to stay sober for even an hour, the suspect was deep in crisis. When he complained of stomach pains during detention, Officer Ayisah, without hesitation, personally financed the suspect’s medical treatment.
Yet, challenges persisted. While at the hospital, the suspect attempted to escape despite being handcuffed. It was thanks to Officer Ayisah’s quick action that he was recaptured and returned to his cell safely.
What makes Officer Ayisah truly remarkable is not just his commitment to justice, but his compassion. He provided counseling not only to me, the complainant, but also to the suspect, seeking to understand the root causes of his behavior. Officer Ayisah believed the young man needed rehabilitation, not imprisonment, to turn his life around.
After much reflection — and despite my pain and loss — I agreed to grant the suspect bail. Thanks to Officer Ayisah’s efforts, the young man has been enrolled in counseling and rehabilitation programs and is now on a journey toward a drug-free, positive future.
Officer Derrick Ayisah is more than a police officer — he is a guardian angel.
His tireless dedication and compassionate spirit are what Ghana needs in its security services. I humbly appeal to the Ghana Police Service to recognize his extraordinary contributions and promote him in rank.
Thanks to Officer Ayisah, a young life has been redirected from a dark path toward hope and redemption. May God richly bless you, CIP Derrick Ayisah.
