Ghana’s ‘Year of Return’ Brings Economic Boom but Sparks Debate Over Rising Prices

Ghana’s Year of Return and Beyond the Return initiatives have made the country a top travel destination for the Black diaspora, attracting thousands of tourists each year, particularly during December.

Celebrities, influencers, and business leaders have all participated in events like Afrochella (now Afrofuture), Detty December, and the Black Star Line Festival.

However, while the tourism surge has boosted Ghana’s economy—bringing in millions in revenue from hotels, nightlife, and local businesses—it has also led to rising costs, making Accra one of the most expensive cities in Africa.

The Tourism Boom vs. The High Cost of Living

While businesses are thriving, many locals have expressed concerns over the inflation of prices, particularly in housing, transportation, and dining. Despite these challenges, Ghana continues to market itself as a hub for African heritage tourism, with plans to further expand its tourism initiatives in 2025.
