WhatsApp to Stop Working on Older Smartphones – Time for an Upgrade

If WhatsApp is no longer functioning on your smartphone, your device may no longer support the app, signaling that it’s time for an upgrade.
Starting soon, Android devices running KitKat OS or older will no longer be compatible with WhatsApp. This change affects phones that are approximately 9 to 10 years old.
Why Is WhatsApp Ending Support for Older Phones?
WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, has stated that discontinuing support for outdated devices will enhance security and app functionality. These older phones lack the necessary hardware to keep up with WhatsApp’s evolving features.
As new AI-powered features are introduced, WhatsApp requires more powerful hardware to ensure a smooth experience. According to HD Blog, Meta is phasing out support to make way for artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that older phones simply cannot handle.
Security Concerns
Without software updates, devices affected by Meta’s discontinued support become more vulnerable to cyber threats, and app functionality is significantly reduced.
Which Phones Are Affected?
The following devices will no longer support WhatsApp:
Samsung
•Galaxy S3
•Galaxy Note 2
•Galaxy Ace 3
•Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola
•Moto G (1st Gen)
•Razr HD
•Moto E 2014
HTC
•One X
•One X+
•Desire 500
•Desire 601
LG
•Optimus G
•Nexus 4
•G2 Mini
•L90
If you own one of these devices, upgrading to a newer smartphone is necessary to continue using WhatsApp. This applies to both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business users.
WhatsApp’s Help Center explains:
“Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates. Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users.”
iPhones Also Affected
Apple users are not exempt from these changes. Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer work on several older iPhone models, including:
•iPhone 5s
•iPhone 6
•iPhone 6 Plus
These devices cannot run iOS 15.1, which will be the minimum system requirement for WhatsApp in 2025.
If your phone is on this list, it may be time to upgrade to a newer model to keep accessing WhatsApp’s services.
